High-Resolution Temperature Program Observation Information and Data Access |
Overview
A major goal of the New England High-Resolution Temperature Program is
to initiate new meteorological measurements in the New England area,
and to collect and incorporate previously existing, but not yet
utilized observations. The process of augmenting the New England
meteorological observation database as already begun. NOAA/ESRL/GSD is
providing access to quality controlled observations from this program
via ftp or LDM, with software support, through its Meteorological Assimilation
Data Ingest System (MADIS) project.
Information
Background
The purpose of the observation and data-handling tasks is to
provide a broader and more-intensive set of observations for model
initialization, diagnostic model evaluation, atmospheric-process
characterization, and subjective forecasting. The tasks are shared by
the NWS Office of Climate, Water,
and Weather Services the NWS Office of Science and
Technology, the NWS Eastern Region, the OAR Environmental Technology Laboratory
(ETL) , and the OAR Earth System Research Laboratory
(ESRL) Global Systems Division (GSD).
Observation Tasks
- Install and operate boundary layer
wind profilers at in the New England region, with emphasis on
providing more detailed spatial air-motion observations, vertical
profilers of air motions, boundary-layer dynamics, and nighttime
transport. (ETL)
-
Enhance the surface measurements of temperature and precipitation, by
automating
Cooperative
Observer Program (COOP) sites in the New England region, with emphasis on
providing a more uniform density of surface observations. (NWS)
- Collect and make available to forecasters and prediction models
data from Cooperative Agency
Profilers (CAP) and regional
mesonets already in place, whose data are not yet centrally collected
nor operationally used. Included in the mesonet dataset are
observations from the ESRL/GSD Ground-Based
GPS-IPW project (ESRL/GSD)
Data-Handling Tasks
-
Acquire, ingest, and quality control ETL and CAP boundary layer
profiler, regional mesonet, and COOP observations. Store
the observations in a central database, and provide them to participating
organizations and other interested parties. (ESRL/GSD)
