    Information Systems Branch
    Support Section

    Joseph Wakefield, Chief

    Overview

The Support Section provides testing, configuration management, and support services for system development work in the Information Systems Branch.

Our primary customer is the National Weather Service, and we support development and testing of their software releases. The development cycle for each Build includes receipt of requirements from NWS, preparation and review of a design approach (including user interface issues, when appropriate) for each requirement, development of the software and test plans, testing, refinement of the software, and system and user documentation of the capabilities. Section staff participate in the design/UI review and documentation tasks, and are responsible for developing and executing test plans. The AWIPS test plans are also used at NWS and Keane, Inc., the AWIPS system support sub-contractor.

Numerous iterations of each version are tested, at several-week intervals, as development proceeds. GSD also maintains a field-release system, connected to the NWS AWIPS network, on which is installed an official copy of the AWIPS software. This is used to verify documentation, investigate problems reported by users, and test patches.

A staff member serves as GSD's liaison to Keane/NWS; his duties include tracking problems discovered during AWIPS testing, maintaining our local software development environment, and keeping file versions synchronized between GSD and Keane/NWS software repositories.

Similar support activities are carried out for the RSA program.

Another task in which we participate is test and evaluation of the AWIPS-II prototype systems being developed for NWS by Raytheon.

    Current work and short-term plans

During 2007, we created new software repositories for AWIPS Operational Builds 7 and 8 (OB7, OB8) development, and our exploratory system known as ALPS (Advanced Linux Prototype System). Section staff support the development, testing, and documentation of these Builds. OB8.1 is the current field release, with OB8.2 beginning field release and OB8.3 in early test phase. For AWIPS-II, we are evaluating AWIPS Development Environment (ADE) 1.0, which was delivered in late June, and preparing to test ADE 2.0, due by the end of January.
