Synopsis

FSL handed off the WFO Advanced build 3 to NWS in March 1997. PRC continues on a somewhat parallel course upgrading the AWIPS build 1.0 with a COTS-based initial message handling system that will constitute AWIPS build 2. This build will bridge the gap between these two systems so that when build 3.x is fielded, there will be no reduction of existing capabilities. It will also serve as an intermediate milestone for build 4 work. Highlights of this build are:

Objective

Provide NWS with a reliable, highly functional WFO in-the-office system which can be used by forecasters and hydromet technicians to perform their duties.

Interface to AWIPS infrastructure

System Enhancements

Redundancy/Failover

Begin LDAD work

Finish WSR88D PUP functions

Documentation

This system may be deployed to a number of NWS sites. It is essential that a much higher level of documentation be accomplished as part of this load. The documentation required will be clarified with PRC. It is likely PRC will be responsible for preparing the documentation but will need information from FSL developers.

In addition to the Users Guide already developed, an Operations Guide will be needed which contains diagnostic procedures to determine a wide variety of error conditions, corrective actions, backup and failover procedures. Also a Site Managers Guide must be written that provides sufficient information and detail to allow the SOO, Electronic System Analysts and the designated focal point to perform diagnostic duties and make routine changes to the system such as adjusting the number of versions of text products, etc.
