Synopsis
FSL handed off the WFO Advanced build 3 to NWS in March 1997. PRC
continues on a somewhat parallel course upgrading the AWIPS build 1.0
with a COTS-based initial message handling system that will constitute
AWIPS build 2. This build will bridge the gap between these two
systems so that when build 3.x is fielded, there will be no reduction
of existing capabilities. It will also serve as an intermediate
milestone for build 4 work. Highlights of this build are:
- Connect to the AWIPS message handling system.
- Complete failover/service backup capabilities
- Begin work to replace existing NWS systems
- Start LDAD work
Objective
Provide NWS with a reliable, highly functional WFO in-the-office system which can be used by forecasters and hydromet technicians to perform their duties.
Interface to AWIPS infrastructure
- Interface to AWIPS message handling system (Isocor X.400)
- Add to NCF interface to site monitoring/control information
- AWIPS clock synchronization - Install NTP to read over ACN in Denver and Boulder after WAN is installed
System Enhancements
- Revised IPC
- Merged monitor/control subsystem
- monitor CPU, I/O, DISK usage, memory usage(E-1,13)
- Revised purging capability (low)
Redundancy/Failover
- Stage AWIPS Failover approach (mirroring, MCServiceGuard)
- Service backup
- warnings
- public forecasts
- aviation forecasts
- other forecasts
- Remove Redundancy approach items
Begin LDAD work
- AFOS dialin port
- Design LDAD database
- Web browser for dissemination
- Develop/Integrate Gateway system
- Implement interfaces through firewall
- Event driven text distribution from internal AWIPS
Performance Enhancements
- Informix tuning for combined application use
Finish WSR88D PUP functions
Graphics Workstation
- delete color tables
- new (UNIX version) Interactive skewT
Additional products
- Wind chill/heat index
- Add buoy data to metar plot
- Revise skewT plot to include hodograph analysis parameters
- Time series (work with TDL)
- Image arithmetic operations in product maker
Text Workstation
- Revise browser to be site-locatable for all AWIPS sites and reflect full range of text products stored.
- Revise code to use 4 character station id
- User sets value for watch/warning expiration alarm (low)
Other
- ship report and buoy decoder
- compressed BUFR
- raob decoder
- Assist TDL with MOS decoder
- Continue OI replacement
- Start design for local development
- Identified bug fixes
- Data quality control message sent to announcer?
- MOS background maps
- Install ICWF?
- Install firewall
Documentation
This system may be deployed to a number of NWS sites. It is essential
that a much higher level of documentation be accomplished as part of
this load. The documentation required will be clarified with PRC. It
is likely PRC will be responsible for preparing the documentation but
will need information from FSL developers.
In addition to the Users Guide already developed, an Operations Guide
will be needed which contains diagnostic procedures to determine a
wide variety of error conditions, corrective actions, backup and
failover procedures. Also a Site Managers Guide must be written that
provides sufficient information and detail to allow the SOO,
Electronic System Analysts and the designated focal point to perform
diagnostic duties and make routine changes to the system such as
adjusting the number of versions of text products, etc.
- Revised User's Guide
- Operations section within User's Guide
- Draft Site Manager's Guide
- Installation and site preparation scripts/notes
Schedule
- March 31 - Requirements completed
- April 12 - Task assignments made
- September 1 - Development software freeze
- September 2 - 19 - Testing and debugging of software load
- late September - Install in Denver
