2.1.2 Beginning Modules

These modules start you off in your use of D2D.

Module 1: Start-Up

This module steps you through the process of starting and exiting the D2D on Linux and setting your User ID. If the five-pane D2D window is already displayed on the screen, skip to Objective 3, and then return to Objectives 1 and 2.

Objective 1 - Starting D2D

These are the steps required to enter the D2D workspace and to start the D2D interface.

1. On the left Graphics Display, click on the D2D L(eft) icon to start D2D. As you might guess, this will start D2D on the left display.

(These buttons are found on the Control Panel, shown in Exhibit 2.1.2-1, at left. The Panel contains icons that relate to the operation of D2D, the RSA Briefing Tool, the Linux desktop, and Netscape. Your Panel will probably look somewhat different.)

2. The About to Start D2D Dialog Box, shown in Exhibit 2.1.2-2, appears.

3. Select the Start button to start D2D immediately.

The initialization process takes approximately 20-30 seconds before the five panes are displayed. Exhibit 2.1.2-3 shows D2D as it looks when it starts up.

Map backgrounds of different scales are displayed in each pane. However, you can change these map backgrounds and scales as needed. Scales are discussed in Section 2.1.7 The Toolbar.

4. Repeat Steps 1-3, only this time in Step 2 click on the D2D R(ight) icon to start D2D on the right-hand display.

Objective 2 - Set Your User ID

This objective shows you how to set your User ID.

1. From the File pull-down menu, choose Select User ID.

2. From the dialog box that appears, choose your name. If your name is not on the list, notify your site manager. You can temporarily use the Default User ID.

3. Your current User ID appears on the D2D Title Bar.

Objective 3 - Exit from D2D

It is important to exit D2D before logging off the system. This objective illustrates how.

1. From the File Menu on the Menu Bar, select Exit.

2. A dialog box appears and asks you to confirm that you want to exit. Select Yes.

Note: Each display exits independently of others. Exit completely shuts down the D2D for the display being exited but has no effect on the other screens.
