2.1.3 Layout of the D2D Graphics Display

This is an overview of the D2D Display. The display features introduced here are covered more thoroughly in Section 2.1.4 Windows, Tooltips, Menus, and Dialog Boxes in D2D.

From the system point of view, the entire D2D interface is a window. As such, it can be moved, minimized (iconified), restored, etc., in the same way as any other window displayed by the system.

Exhibit 2.1.2-3 (replicated here) illustrates the layout of the D2D graphics screen. The Title Bar is the top border of the D2D Window and contains the current User ID once it has been selected.

The first row of labels (menu buttons) is the Menu Bar. These menu buttons open pull-down menus that contain a large number of graphic or image products from various data sources.

The second row of labels is the Toolbar which contains menu buttons and option menus for manipulating displayed data.

The D2D default display consists of five panes, similar to window panes. Each pane is a separate display process and is not affected by the settings in the other panes. If one pane (display process) stalls or crashes, it restarts automatically and a message is displayed in the Message Status Bar. Dead panes can also be restarted manually with the "Restart Dead Panes" option under the "Options" menu described later in this chapter.

Map backgrounds are displayed in each pane. The large display pane (also known as the Main Display Pane) is where all data selections are initially displayed and where Toolbar manipulations take place.

The four small panes (also known as monitor panes) along the left side of the D2D Window are used for both displaying and monitoring data. Products that you select for display always appear in the large display pane. With a click of Mouse Button 3 (right) over a small pane, the contents of the large display pane are swapped into the small pane. Data are automatically updated in these small panes, and looping, zooming, and panning are also possible.

The size of all panes is adjustable. Press Mouse Button 1 on the pane's border and drag either horizontally or vertically to resize. The size of the map background adjusts accordingly. There are two icons in the Toolbar with two pre-defined display pane settings.

Along the bottom of the D2D Window is the Status Bar, consisting of the General Status Area, Radar Status Area, Frame Count, and System Clock. Messages appear in the General Status Area to inform you of the state of data requests, system operation and failover, and other information. Radar subsystem status messages appear in the Radar Status Area.
